Art Blakey’s Moanin’ at All About Jazz

My extended analysis of Art Blakey’s seminal hard-bop album Moanin’ is now available at All About Jazz. This includes an extensive review of Moanin’, its place and function in jazz at its release date and historically, and an overview of the impact of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messenger’s through the years. Read it here!

Not that Bobby Timmons isn’t a GREAT jazz composer, but the Blues March was written by one of the other greats, Benny Golson! I love how Blakey keeps control of the tempo and the dynamics thru his drums on this clip.
